The Strengths based development movement was started six decades ago by the father of strengths-based psychology, Don Clifton. After immersing himself in the study of human development, Clifton came to realise a significant gap in the conventional approaches of the time – everyone was focused on telling people what was wrong and what they had to fix, but no one was helping people explore and amplify what was already innately right about them.
 
In the 1980s Clifton founded a customer research and personnel selection firm, which saw him develop hundreds of scientifically validated instruments designed to identify and categorise top talent for key roles in various companies. 
 
His work across psychology, human development and talent management informed Clifton’s foundational belief – people can achieve exponentially more by focusing on their strengths rather than trying to fix their weaknesses. 
 
In 1999 Clifton released the first version of StrengthsFinder. Since then, over 27 million people worldwide have taken the assessment and used the results to unlock their potential.
 
In 2006, respected polling firm Gallup completed a comprehensive review and update of the StrengthsFinder instrument and launched StrengthsFinder 2.0. For the last decade Gallup certified coaches have been bringing the power of strength-based development to people, teams and organisations everywhere.
